Dentures and implants: your questions answered

Short answers to the questions we hear most. Each links to a fuller guide.

About these answers

These answers are general information in plain English, reviewed by a dentist. They're not advice about your own mouth. For that, you need an examination, ideally with an X-ray.

Common questions

Are implants better than dentures?

Not for everyone. Implants don't slip, but they need surgery, cost more and are usually private in the UK. Dentures need no surgery and are available on the NHS. Take the quiz to see which are worth discussing.

Can I get dentures on the NHS?

Yes. Dentures are a Band 3 treatment, £332.10 in England (checked October 2026). Some people get them free. Read about costs.

Can I get implants on the NHS?

Rarely. The NHS says implants are usually only available privately, except for some people who cannot wear dentures, for example after mouth cancer or an accident.

Why do my dentures keep slipping?

Usually because the gums and jawbone shrink and change shape over time. A reline, a new denture or a clip-on denture can help. Read more.

What is a clip-on denture?

A denture that clips onto two to four implants. It doesn't slip, but still comes out for cleaning. Read more.

What are fixed teeth on implants?

A full arch of teeth screwed onto four to six implants. They stay in all the time. Read more.

How long do dentures last?

The Oral Health Foundation says they often need replacing every five to eight years, because your mouth changes shape.

Should I sleep in my dentures?

Usually not. The NHS advises taking them out at night unless your dentist recommends otherwise.

How do I clean dentures?

Brush them with soft soap or washing-up liquid morning and evening, not toothpaste, over water or a towel. Full guide.

Does implant surgery hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. Some swelling and soreness for a few days is normal.

How long do implants take to heal?

The Oral Health Foundation says implants usually take around four months to heal and bond with the bone.

I'm only missing a few teeth. What are my options?

A partial denture, a bridge or implants. Compare them.
